One useful CBD fallback, four different nights. Murmur suits a smaller night built around cocktails, requests and a pianist rather than a full production show.

Friday 4 September

Frequency at Musicland

An easy, lower-cost Friday choice with classic hits, crowd favourites and dance-floor material. Arriving early makes it dinner plus a full-band night without the usual ticket price.

The Radiohead Project at The JazzLab

Amelia Evans leads a jazz quartet through material from OK Computer, Kid A and Amnesiac. This is not a lookalike tribute; it is an intimate reinterpretation for listeners who like the songs pulled apart and rebuilt.

Groove Dimension at Lucky 13

Lucky 13 is built for a dance-floor night, and the brief is refreshingly direct: Earth, Wind & Fire, Chic, Commodores, Kool & The Gang, Stevie Wonder and the whole 70s funk-and-soul pocket.

Saturday 5 September

BABBA at The Espy

A rare afternoon option in one of Melbourne’s best-known band rooms. BABBA has been touring since 1994 and leans into the harmonies, costumes, humour and dance-floor side of ABBA.

Casey Donovan at The Capital

Casey Donovan can carry a theatre. The set is billed around Australian Idol, musical-theatre showstoppers, major TV performances, Donna Summer material and new songs, so this is more than a nostalgia booking.

The Linda Ronstadt Show at Hawthorn Arts Centre

Ella Hooper fronts an all-star Melbourne band for two sets of Ronstadt’s country-rock catalogue. This is the larger, reserved-seat theatre choice for the night.

TUSK at Chelsea Heights Hotel

TUSK is one of the proven Fleetwood Mac tribute names on the Victorian circuit, and this 50-year celebration is aimed squarely at the hits: Dreams, Go Your Own Way, Landslide, Rhiannon and more.

A Night with Tina at MEMO

This is a Tina Turner drag-cabaret spectacle with dancers, costuming and MEMO’s seated-room focus. Choose it for a theatrical night rather than a standard band tribute.

Dark Room at Musicland

A main-stage tribute to The Angels followed by the Musicland All Star Band. This is the big suburban rock-room choice.

Wild Dreamers at Oakleigh Music Hall

Lisa Mio fronts this dedicated Linda Ronstadt tribute in a club room. It is the more intimate alternative to the Ella Hooper theatre production running the same night.

Alright Hey at The Sphinx

This sits closer to comedy and cabaret than live-band territory, but it belongs in a grown-up weekend guide as a proper showroom option outside Melbourne.

Sunday 6 September

The Big Chillout at Brunswick Ballroom

A Sunday-afternoon Motown spectacular with food available in the room. General-admission seating is limited and first-come, first-served, so arrive at doors if sitting matters.

The Herberts at Musicland

The Herberts play 60s British rock from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and more. It is the strongest free full-band option in this week’s scan.

Tracy Hamilton at Bright Brewery

A relaxed Father’s Day session of classic covers beside the Ovens River. It is worth flagging for anyone already in north-east Victoria or turning Sunday into a regional day trip.

Into The Mystic at MEMO

Joe Creighton leads serious Australian players and guest singers through Van Morrison’s catalogue. A Sunday afternoon at MEMO is a good match for a show that rewards paying attention.

Vika and Linda at Queenscliff Town Hall

Vika and Linda bring The Bullettes for songs from their new album alongside the voices, stories and catalogue of a nearly four-decade career.

Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai at St Kilda Town Hall

A curated concert of ghazals, Sufi qawwalis, Bollywood songs and subcontinental classical music by local Melbourne artists - exactly the sort of culturally rich show generic gig lists often miss.

Transients at The JazzLab

Not every worthwhile gig needs to be a Saturday night. This daytime RSL show includes lunch and a disco-era set, making it a sensible social outing for groups.

Sold out or caution notes

  • Arcobar’s Barbra Streisand / Neil Diamond dinner show on Saturday 5 September is marked sold out. Do not plan around it unless the venue releases seats.
  • Kodaline’s farewell-tour show at Forum Melbourne on Saturday 5 September is also sold out; the official venue page has a waitlist.
